Birstonas was mentioned for the first time in the fourteenth century as a "homestead at salty water." For several centuries, there was a castle and a manor of the Lithuanian rulers, a summer residence and royal hunting areas. Birstonas – a jazz Mecca
On the last weekend of March Birstonas is flooded with jazz sounds – this cosy resort town hosts a traditional, Lithuania's oldest international jazz festival, called Birstonas. Since 1980, the jazz melodies coming here every two years have long earned the resort a name of the Lithuanian jazz Mecca. From all over Lithuania, and not only, the festival attracts the jazz "pilgrims" – amateurs, professional artists, or simply lovers of good music.
