The Lithuanian Flag Day is commemorated since 1919 when on the tower of the Gediminas castle Lithuanian volunteer squads raised the country flag as a symbol of the freedom. Several times the flag was ripped off by invaders however it was returned in the 1988 and is still fluttering to this day. Every year on the 1st of January the flag on the Gediminas castle tower is being replaced and the old one is given to a different school. During this day all country institutions, companies and organizations raise Lithuanian flags on their buildings.
