The book smuggling is a unique phenomenon that has existed only in Lithuania and has no analogues in the world. In the XIX century, after the revolt, the Russian Empire government forbade Lithuanian press with Latin characters. Book smugglers were people who did not obey the ban and conveyed as well as circulated the forbidden press to their region. Eventually they started to symbolize national and cultural oppression fighters. The Book smuggler’s day is commemorated in the whole of Lithuania by arranging various commemorations and events.
