Active recreation events
A hike, a bicycle race, a marathon, trail running, a hot air balloon ride or kiteboarding can become a true celebration when a huge crowd of people who are crazy about being active get together. The enthusiasm and excitement is contagious, and successful competitions become a tradition. Without it, Lithuania’s autumn, winter, spring and summer wouldn’t be quite so vibrant, and the participants would miss out on the impressions and sensations, and the opportunity to compete against themselves.
This is a celebration for everyone who can’t imagine their life without running. Covering 42.195 kilometres on the streets of Lithuania’s capital, the event attracts locals as well as runners from abroad. Running a marathon in an old Baroque city is both a challenge and an extraordinary feast for the eyes.
Lithuanians have an inexplicable desire to fly. Maybe because we’re hopeless romantics; maybe because our wonderful country looks even more beautiful from above; or maybe because we reach for the sky because we always need more than we have. The first Lithuanian Hot Air Balloon Championship took place in the 1990s. Since then, the competition between the pilots in their baskets has been held every year.
They swim, cycle and run. While they compete, they even find time to look around and see the things along the way – the national and regional parks, the architectural monuments in the cities and towns, and the rivers and hill forts. The organisers of the Lithuanian Triathlon Championship came up with this event out of passion for the sport. The combination of three disciplines gives the triathlon charm and dynamics, and no one knows who the winner will be until the very finish. Isn’t that something that you would like to become addicted to?
Running should be enjoyable. And the pleasure is double with the sea breathing at your back, when you can breathe in the clean air of pine forests and run on trails that no one has ever run on before. The Curonian Spit is a UNESCO site. The views from the highest dunes will recharge you if you’re running low from the long distance or the soft sand. The wide, natural beaches will give you space for thought, and the dense pine forests will protect you from the chilly wind. There are four distances to choose from: nine kilometres, 21 kilometres, marathon or ultra. The ultra starts in Nida by Parnidis Dune, and ends at the Smiltynės Ferry Terminal. And it’s not running – it’s an adventure. Experience it!
In summer, when Vilnius is on holiday, cyclists take over the streets. Already a tradition in the capital, Vilnius Velomarathon declares the core values of family, safety, health and the environment. The largest bicycle race in Lithuania attracts more and more cycling enthusiasts every year. There are different routes for professionals, amateurs and children.
