Halloween is the perfect opportunity to get the bags out and go for a family adventure abroad. Spooky tours and a Halloween-themed stroll around the city are among the list of activities for a quick weekend getaway in Lithuania.
Although Halloween found its way into Lithuania only a few decades ago, there are quite a few things to do and see during this spooky season.
From a Halloween-themed neighborhood visit to a creepy tour in a century-old prison, here are the five things to see for some chills and thrills in Lithuania.
Thousands Of Devils In One Place
Beelzebub, Mephistopheles, and Lucifer are just a few of the hundreds of names the mythological creature is known for. In 1966, Lithuanian artist Antanas Žmuidzinavičius started a collection dedicated to the horned beast and invited the visitors to bring a devil as a gift to the museum. Now, the Devil’s Museum, situated in Kaunas, European Capital of Culture 2022, stores about 3000 exhibits from all around the world in every color, shape, and form for a unique and spooky visit on a dreary autumn day.
Horror in the Halloween Town
The true fans of everything eerie feel just like home at Farmland park, located on the outskirts of Kaunas city. The park has transformed into a huge Halloween town with everything one could expect for a thrilling ride. While kids try to find their way out of a labyrinth, the fearless take a stroll down the forest of spirits and look for ghosts in the haunted house. Costumed monsters and zombies populate the whole town – if that gets too scary, the visitors are invited into the witch’s hut for dinner and a warm drink.
Atmospheric Pumpkin Exhibit in Užupis
Užupis, the bohemian neighborhood of Lithuania’s capital Vilnius, is known for its many art initiatives and installations. Every year, the shores of the Vilnelė river light up, illuminating Užupis with hundreds of jack-o'lanterns. The idea was born to bring Užupians together and continues as a spooky yet comfy tradition in the capital. Photos from the last exhibition can be found here.
Explore the Cathedral Crypts
Even though Vilnius Cathedral is one of the most iconic buildings in the capital of Lithuania, most have not seen what hides below its surface. A guided tour into the age-old crypts shows the ancient burials, the Royal Mausoleum, and introduces visitors to the rich history of funerary traditions and archaeological finds. The biggest mystery of the crypts is the lost treasure of Vytautas the Great – legends say it lies hidden in various parts of the Cathedral.
Stroll Around Century-Old Prison
If all of the above is not enough, a tour of Lukiškės Prison is the perfect thing for the thrill-seekers. For 115 years, the prison stood guarded by high walls and barbed wire, but recently it opened its doors to the public and even found its way to the latest season of Netflix’s Stranger Things. Now, the building complex is an event venue and a home to over 200 artists, inviting the curious to discover and explore its exciting atmosphere. The prison offers a regular day tour and a spooky night visit, which is a perfect setup of hair-raising stories and an unforgettable experience.
