In Lithuania, you’ll find plenty of museums that are not satisfied with presenting you with artifacts in glass cabinets. Instead they want to put you in the picture. Near Telšiai, you’ll find the Museum of the Samogitian Village Museum. Here you can wander around a perfectly recreated late 19th, early 20th century Samogitian village comprising 16 buildings. There’s three farmhouses, along with a forge, a traditional cemetery, and a mill, which was moved from another location and restored to working order in 2020. Visitors are able to explore the buildings and their exhibits, and become acquainted with life as it was led in this part of Lithuania. The museum also organizes regular demonstrations of traditional handicrafts like wool spinning, embroidery, and even toy making. Meanwhile, events are held to celebrate popular local and national festivals, with traditional music performed. And for those with an interest in gardening and flora, The Samogitian Village Museum is home to a collection of more than 25 different types of peonies, a variety of herbs, an authentic farmer's garden with Lithuanian vegetables, as well as domestic animals such as horses, sheep, goats and rabbits.
